NAVY SAILORS DOMINATE DUNLOP BELL REGATTA - OOD Asita Tennekoon
The annual race for the Dunlop Bell challenge trophy was held on the Bolgoda waters on Sunday 23rd July hosted by YASL and CMYC. With good Southwesterly Winds prevailing throughout the day, the Optimist fleet got off to an early start at 11.20hrs. Though end of term exams prevented several youngsters from competing in this event, keen competition was seen in this race with a protest too having to be heard by the protest committee!
Zai Pestonjee led this race over the trapezoid course and won it comfortably with brother and sister Jehan and Tarini De Silva securing 2nd and 3rd positions.
Competitors from the Naval Sailing Club dominated the Laser, Enterprise and GP 14 Classes with PO WAR Nishantha & NGMU Ghanawardana winning the Dunlop Bell trophy on corrected time as well as the GP 14 class race.
The GP14 class race was won by WAR Nishantha & NGMU Ghanawardana, 1st runners up WMC Marambe & KC Soyza, 2nd runners up Devin Goonewardena & Rohithe Amerasinghe.
The Laser class race was won by PDDS Rajapaksha, 1st runner up PNPK Disanayake and 2nd runner up KVN Dimal.
The Enterprise Class race was won by WPUS Kumara & AMJP Aththanayaka, 1st runners up JHTC Appuhamee & KC Soysa and 2nd runners up KWGE Danashka & KSK Silva all of the Naval Sailing Club.
A total of 21 boats participated in this event.
All competitors were provided with lunch by YASL and several ladies present were invited by Joseph Kenny to distribute the prizes and Certificates to the overall winners and the top 3 positions in each Class.
At the conclusion Mr Kenny thanked the Commodore and committee of the CMYC for the use of the Club facilities for this Regatta.
