We almost didn't have a race last Sunday, for reasons I can't imagine. The weather was glorious, the wind fabulous and the sailors... mostly absent. Where were you all?
In any case it doesn't matter, because those of us who know where our priorities lay were where we should have been—at CMYC for a glorious day of enthusiastic drinking. Indeed it was shaping up to be a fine day until Sarith & Anna dropped in and conducted a swift coup, insisting that we sail a race. The two of them descended upon us after having kidnapped the rightful OOD and clapped him (Or her? We don't actually know who it was...) in irons, anointing themselves Officers O' the Day and setting us up for a smattering of limp, confused sailing.
Sarith set us a course that resembled a regurgitated bowl of spaghetti and after we dutifully told him it was a very nice course indeed we packed him off with Anna, Per, Mohan, Jonquil, Simon, Fergus and Cathy to sail their little race. And what a race it was!
We had four boats on the water last Sunday, and two of them finished! Sarith and Anna managed to forget the course that they themselves set so didn't finish (that'll show them!) and Mohan and Per were having far too much fun in their swanky catamaran to stick to the course at all, so sailed somewhere else entirely. Indeed it was up to Jonquil, Simon, Fergus and Cathy to show the rest of us how it's done.
All told, Jonquil & Simon came in first place, and Fergus & Cathy came in second, despite it being Cathy's first day sailing at CMYC! Hearty congratulations to all of them :)
No trophies, cups, shields or awards were distributed last Sunday, but that doesn't mean performances weren't worthy of prizes. A quick poll on who should win what yielded the following:
4. Sarith & Anna - The Inaugural Broken Sextant Award for forgetting the course they themselves set
3. Per & Mohan - A participation trophy for sailing in vaguely the right direction some of the time
2. Cathy - The most-intimidating-newcomer prize for going from zero to (second-best) hero in no seconds flat
1. Jonquil & Simon - A glass for Chardonnay each! For winning the race. Like you're supposed to.
Jokes aside, it was a pleasure to see you all. You can't know how much I miss spending my Sundays at the club. Intercontinental Ballistic Bearhugs to every last one of you from Anna and me.
